Q: I am wanting to gift someone a granadilla tree that is blooming beautifully in my garden. What would be the best way to “share” my tree with them?

A: Great question! The best way to “gift” or “share” your own granadilla tree, without relocating the entire tree, is to propagate a new tree via stem cuttings. Below we share simple steps to follow when propagating Granadilla Tree cuttings.

                        • Use a sharp, sterilised pair of pruners and clip off about 10 – 15 cm, Cutting just below the node.
                        • Strip off the bottommost leaves and tendrils and then dip the ends in either our Dynaroot Powder or Dip&Root Liquid rooting hormone.
                        • Stick the new treated cuttings about 1 cm into a well-draining potting mix or an equal mix of sand and peat.
                        • Lightly water and then cover with a clear, ventilated plastic bag or growing kit dome.
                        • Place the cuttings in a shady location, keeping them warm and moist.
                        • Once significant rooting has occurred, they can be transplanted to their permanent locations.

Q: My cuttings are not developing roots, what am I doing wrong?

A: First off, you are not alone! Lots of people who propagate cuttings do not always see root development because of a few small errors they make. Below are the most common reasons why cuttings do not successfully start rooting:

                        • Not stripping the leaves low enough on the cutting (where the roots emerge from)
                        • Not stripping enough leaves from cutting; leaves transpire water which can cause the cutting to lose turgidity (wilt) and possibly die.
                        • Not taking proper care of the unrooted cutting before planting it; Cuttings should be stuck in their propagation medium as soon as they arrive, but if this is not possible, store them cool, respecting temperature minimums for cold intolerant plants.
                        • Too little space between cuttings; if the cuttings are planted too close together there can be increased loss from bacterial disease and often flowering is delayed in liners by a few days.
                        • Incorrect growing medium; a good growing medium should have both good water holding capacity and high air porosity. Ideally, the growing medium should have peat to retain water and aggregate such as perlite or vermiculite to increase air porosity.
                        • Not adjusting misting/fogging to work with the selected growing medium; if too much application of mist/fog keeps the growing medium saturated, excess water will flow from the bottom of the trays and rooting will be delayed. Applying too little mist/fog will increase transpiration from the leaves, cuttings will lose turgidity and could die from drying out.
                        • Incorrect growing medium temperatures; To improve success with rooting of cuttings it is best to maintain growing medium temperatures between 20-25°C; even cold tolerant crops such as pansy, dianthus, osteospermum, petunia, etc. prefer these medium temperatures for rooting. Warm growing medium temperatures accelerate cell division which leads to faster callusing, root initial development and subsequent root growth.
                        • Incorrect light exposure; During the winter in northern climates, most plant cultivars would benefit from supplemental lighting. Research has shown that light speeds up the rooting process and the liners can finish up to 10-14 days faster. In the summer, especially in southern climates, high light can damage cuttings mostly from excess transpiration of water through the leaves or also through heat build up. Cuttings should be shaded to slow transpiration and keep them cool.
                        • Air temperature is not as important for rooting, but it is suggested that it should be set between 19-24°C. Air temperature becomes important when new shoot growth begins; in that, warmer temperatures encourage faster top growth.

Q: What are the best veggies to plant to get my veggie garden started?

A: Certain veggies work well under certain conditions, depending on the season and where you plant them. Here’s a list of 10 Garden Vegetables You Need to Plant:

                        1. Lettuce; Growing lettuce is easy, but it doesn’t like heat, so lettuce should be at the top of your spring garden checklist.
                        2. Peas; They enjoy well-drained soil, quite a bit of sun (although most varieties are pretty cold-hardy), and they also have some beautiful flowers.
                        3. Onions; There are many onion varieties, from sweet onions to red onions and yellow onions, whose hardiness can withstand cool temperature planting and growing. Onion plants are simple to grow and provide a number of benefits through companion planting, giving your flora and vegetable garden all-natural, organic defences against pests and other detrimental effects.
                        4. Swiss Chard; Reminiscent of spinach, but with a bit more spice to it, Swiss chard is probably one of the top favourite spring crops to grow. It provides prolific amounts of delicious leaves, and it’s also very pretty. It’s super, super easy to grow, and incredibly prolific.
                        5. Summer cabbage; classed as heavy feeding plants, you’ll need to add plenty of garden compost and/or well rotted farmyard manure to your soil before sowing or planting. Summer Cabbage is best sown in a greenhouse or similar environment in March and April for planting out about 4 weeks later.
                        6. Kale; Kale is one of those things that you either love or you hate. It tastes best when the leaves are tender and grown fairly rapidly. Kale will result in the best, tender tasty leaves if it’s grown in very fertile, very well-drained soil.
                        7. Beetroot; This is a vegetable that you’ll want to be mindful of not only the soil type and drainage, but the fertilizer you put on. Like most root veggies, if you’re not careful, top growth will be prolific and you won’t get much root growth in contrast.
                        8. Carrots; Keep them thinned out once the tops start to reach about 2 inches tall and keep around 2 inches between each plant. If the tops of carrots are showing, you can cover them with some mulch. This will keep the root from getting a bitter taste.
                        9. Potatoes; There are so many varieties and so many different ways to enjoy this delicious crop. You can grow your potatoes in containers and just pile dirt up on top of them as the tubers grow. Some people put them in gardens and mound them. You’ll simply take cut potato pieces that have a couple of eyes each and put them in well-drained, loose fertile soil. As the tubers begin growing, add more soil on top. Easy peasy.
                        10. Chillies; Beautifully decorative in your garden, and potent on your plate at the end of the day, the rewards of growing your own chillies are endless.

Keep in mind that veggies like lettuce, beetroot and spinach are compact growers and can be used as borders.

PBR has a special liquid fertilizer that works exceptionally well in your veggie garden. It is odourless, non-toxic and safe to use around birds, bee’s and other animals.
